Bruce, although Peter has summed up the situation as it stands, and assuming your interest is in Zarathustra himself as opposed to Zoroastrianism, you might find a couple of books I have listed below helpful, also within those there are links to other authors.

a)H P Blavatsky : The Secret Doctorine b)V Gordon Childe : The Aryans (A Study of Indo-European Origins.

None of the above, nor any other can pinpoint Zarathustras DOB., but it goes a long way towards understanding what is being debated today, and how relevant or not each factions views are.
